ATS is an architecture office based in Athens and Hydra, Greece.

It was founded by Andronikos Tsigounis in 1985.

Approach

Our varied portfolio of built work includes one-off houses, public buildings such as banks and care homes, and an extensive collection of carefully crafted renovation and conservation projects.

Collaboration is an integral part of our design process- with fellow consultants, builders and clients. Our experience has shown us that good ideas are often the result of conversation and exchange of skills.

For the last 25 years the practice has had a significant presence on the island of Hydra. Being under the Archaeological protection law, the island has a very peculiar set of restrictions concerning its building permits. It is a car-free island, where the transport of materials is done by mules resulting in local construction techniques that resemble those of the 1960s. We are proud to have gained expertise by our time working on the island; we treat each difficulty as a creative opportunity to craft sensitive and unique spaces that strongly respond to their surroundings.

Because of the small size of our practice, we build a close relationship with our clients. We believe in narrative, both spatial and the poetic. With every project we aim to interweave these underlying stories with the careful composition of materials, lighting, proportions and craftsmanship.
Team

Andronikos Tsigounis, Founder, Eng. dipl. NTUA

Andronikos is the founder of ATS and has been working in practice for the last 45 years. Having spent most of his working life in Hydra, he has notable knowledge on the construction methods and design possibilities that respond to the archaeological restrictions of the island and has considerable experience as a design leader.

His first-hand knowledge of construction management is a result from his experience directing contractors and craftsmen, developed over a number of years of being based on site.

Maria Nikolopoulou, Project Architect, Eng. dipl. NTUA

Maria has been a member of aTs since graduating from the NTUA. She has an in-depth knowledge of the planning regulations and tender packages, especially concerning the archaeological intricacies of the island of Hydra. She has lead a few of the most important projects of our practice.

In parallel with the studio, she is a keen photographer, an interest that feeds into her design methodology.

Stefania Tsigkouni, Project Architect, MArch, Bartlett, UCL, London

Stefania completed her RIBA Part I at Sheffield School of Architecture in 2014. Her final project was nominated for the RIBA Bronze Medal and her dissertation won the Robert Cawkwell Prize in Architecture.

She undertook the MArch RIBA Part II programme at the Bartlett, where she graduated with distinction.

Before joining aTs Stefania worked at raumlabor in Berlin, k-studio in Athens and Knox Bhavan in London. She worked on varying scales of projects from furniture and exhibition design  to a large co-op housing development in Mumbai.

She has been in and out the studio most of her life but joined aTs full time in September 2019. She is also co-founder of threshold.

Marina Iakovidou

Marina is a freelance collaborator of the practice, responsible for the administrational procedures at the Town Planning Authorities, Archaeology Services and any other Public Authority Department.

The above is the core structure of our studio. However we are always respectful and honestly grateful of our close team of structural and mechanical engineers, stone masons, builders, marble artisans, and every single person we have collaborated with.
